jonathan kydd_0180

Jonathan is a man of many hats, flipping them subtly between writing, voicing, acting, podcasting, film-making, producing and publishing. For example this year he was over 20 characters in the Mr Bean cartoon series but also directed and acted in a podcast about President Truman Emperor Hirohito and the atom bomb ‘The President and the Emperor which was ‘Pick of the Week’ in the Radio Times. Meanwhile he was writing/editing the fourth volume of his father’s memoirs ‘Why don’t you f…f…f…photograph something worthwhile’ – his father being the much loved character actor Sam Kydd, which he will publish this year under the umbrella of his publishing company, ‘Squydd’. He is also as he writes, editing a documentary he has shot about his father’s prolific career.

He started off as a child actor – playing his father’s son – in Gerald Thomas’s ‘The Iron Maiden’. With the immortal line “Hello Dad Mum’s after you.” Mum being Joan Sims. When he started acting professionally, after a stint in the National Youth Theatre, his then agent pushed him towards being a clone of his father so he was in Minder  (three times), One Foot in the Grave (twice), Cats Eyes, Enemy at The Door, The Onedin Line, Ladies in Charge, and The Gentle Touch, and then the Bill (twice) all as ‘wide boy cockneys’. But at the same time he was writing his own material and appearing in comedy shows in Edinburgh. He was in the Perrier award runner up show Theatrical Digs and his own show Out of Order whilst singing his own comedy songs in the band The Kondos who as well as having their own Komedy Klub in Chelsea were third in the New Faces Final of 1988. Before this he found himself in the now cult classic puppet show ‘Pipkins’ starring the stuff of nightmares Hartley Hare. He did 76 episodes. This led to several other ‘kids’ series including Cats Whiskers D.J. Kat, Boiled Egg and Soldiers, and Hold Tight. As a consequence of having comedy experience under his belt, his TV career consequently took a turn as he was next cast in several series of Brian Conley’s Saturday night shows ‘This Way Up’ and ‘The Brian Conley Show’. He was in many sketches and ended up writing over 25 comedy songs for Brian, one subsequently on the Royal Variety Show. (Incidentally Jonathan is writing a musical with the then MD of that series, Andy Street called ‘Fool’). His versatility in the Conley shows got him in vision on Sky introducing the Comedy Channel with a mass of characters. His Edinburgh shows got him cast  in the successful Hull Truck improvised play ‘Still Crazy After All These Years’ and his profile having been raised he began to work in radio where he could play more than just cockneys. He was in 3 series of the sketch show ‘Dial M for Pizza’, with Mike Grady, Brenda Blethyn and Robert Bathurst, 4 series of ‘Nightcap’ with Phil Cornwell, an Actor’s Life for Me. Tintin, Taking it Up the Octave, and the Fosdyke Saga. On TV he was in Jonathan Ross’s Last Resort series (as actor and voice over) KYTV, French Fields, (playing two different Frenchmen) Lazarus and Dingwall, Very Big Very Soon, Punchdrunk, About Face, 10 episodes of Smith and Jones, Starting Out, Roger Roger, Kavanagh QC, Trial and Retribution, The Upper Hand (he was a regular, Filly Fingers) The Ferguson Theory, The Quest, Jonathan Creek, Holby City, Doctors and Norsemen. Now having a foothold in radio comedy he was in Little Blighty on the Down, Perseus Pym, and Flying the Flag, which would ultimately lead to big shows like ‘Chambers’ (where he played Vince), The Attractive Young Rabbi, People Like Us, the Hal Cruttenden Show, 4 series of The Castle where he was Duncan and Thomas, Cabin Pressure and Charles Paris. Chambers in fact ended up on BBC 1 for two series. (With James Fleet, John Bird and Sarah Lancashire). His voice career flourished. He was ‘Hagrid’ in all the Harry Potter games and Peeves the Ghost as well as Death Eaters and Erklings. He was The Suit Voice in Crysis, Jack the Ripper in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate as well as plying many people being murdered (the Ubisoft director said he did “very good death”), and various voices in 80 other games including Line of Duty, Nexon PD, Dark Souls, Drakengard 2, Fabel, Ghost Hunter, and Final Fantasy Tactics. He was a voice for L’Oreal for 7 years (“we think of you in a white lab coat” he was told), all the voices in the infamous “Ferrero Rocher Ambassador’s Reception” ad, and voiced every newspaper, household appliance and supermarket there is whilst doing major brands like Kodak, Audi, Volkswagen, Shell, BP, Adidas, Samsung, Ford, and Pepsi etc. One of his favourites is a Shake ‘N’ Vac ad playing Tarzan. Jessica Martin is Jane. On the promo front he voiced for all the tv stations as well as Disney and Discovery  (he still does). This led to a huge presence in documentaries including many Inside Stories, 8 seasons of Airport Security, a mass of Africa’s Deadliest, 12 eps of Shark Attack Files, Shark v Whale, the Doing Hard Time series, a Dinosaur series, One Born Any Minute and JFK and the Russian Revolution. On the animation front amongst others he was in Teddy Trucks, 76 episodes of Paddington Bear, (playing Paddington) Bangers and Mash doing all the voices, Astrofarm, Noddy Toyland Detective, Dennis the Menace, Bash Street Kids, Bimble’s Bucket, Hilltop Hospital, Romauld the Reindeer, Noddy Toyland Detective, and Toy Story That Time Forgot, playing Ray-Gon the armourer and also a gladiator dinosaur. Visually he was in many ads too including the AA ad where the little boy buried the car in the sand which was on for 4 years, a BT ad playing a silent film comedian with Tracy Bennett, a Solos ad playing a pirate, and the Heinz tomato ketchup ad The Best Things Come to Those Who Wait.  They made a huge foam rubber dummy of him and hung it from the ceiling of the airport during his SAS airlines campaign in Denmark.  He was the face of Citibank in Germany for a year feeding a dog in ads and posters. He made a much praised and prize winning short film about the world of voice overs called “Ahaarrr” and has written and shot and performed in many of his own comedy music videos with first his gigging band “the Amazing Singing Dentists” and then with the “Rudy Vees”. His favourite songs are the 1930s Grime rap “Posh” “King of Thongs” and “Dance Like My Dad”. He has made an album of straight (ie non comedic) songs named Eggshell Heart. He is on The ChelseafootballFancast twice a week and does a 2 minute critique of every match called “The Fanbite” which has a regular 15k a match audience. He has written and produced three musicals Hey Get a Life (at St. Andrews Lane Dublin where it got the review in the Irish Times (“Convulsed With Laughter From Start to Finish”).The Hard Boiled Egg and the Wasp and Doodle all of which have had fringe productions. His publishing company Squydd Books has published four titles: “For You the War is Over” which is about his father’s WW2 exploits as a POW, all three volumes of his father’s memoirs, Be A Good Boy Sam, Never Mind the Acting, Why Don’t You f…f…f…Photograph Something Worthwhile, and his own book about being a voice over/actor, Go Quicker Sound Slower. He has three children. All girls. Georgia, Eloise and Elsie. Elsie is a year old. And lives in Putney. (2026)

This is a selection of work I’ve done. In particular Radio 4 stuff is hardly included as I’ve forgotten all the dates. So I’ve missed out ‘Flying the Flag’, ‘Best of British’, ‘People Like Us’, ‘Nick Revell’s show’, ‘Alexy Sayle’s show’, ‘The Last Fish’, ‘The 39 Sheep’, ‘Nightcap’, ‘Peter Dickson’s Happy Hour’, ‘Perseus Pym’, ‘Little Blighty on the Down’, ‘Cat’s Whiskers’, ‘…by Woody Allen’, ‘Errol Flynn;’ and ‘Let em Eat cake’ (extracts from some of these are on the site)
